Alumni News: Brendan Finneran

Flying in the face of cancer
By Pete Iorizzo

There is Brendan Finneran, scarfing curly fries in the Siena College cafeteria, bickering with his buddies about who is best-looking and teasing a teammate about a gaffe at lacrosse practice. He's your typical carefree college student, wearing sweat pants, a blue T-shirt and a black baseball cap, spun to the back.

Look closer.

When Finneran flips the cap to scratch his forehead, he reveals his bald spot. When he walks to the buffet table, each step is marked by a slight hitch. If he were to pull up his right pant leg, he'd show a jagged scar, which he enjoys telling friends is from a shark bite.

But it's not. The scar is your first hint at Finneran's story, the cover to his proverbial book. The scar is a reminder of the titanium rod beneath, of the piece of metal that takes the place of what once was his bone. It's a symbol of a disease that robbed him of everything before he took it all back.

Listen closer.

"I want to go out and have fun," he says. "I want it all to be erased. I want to be a normal kid again."

His is a story of the average college kid who's anything but.

Coaching Changes

I’m thrilled to announce that Chris Driggs will be the Boys Head Coach effective immediately. Many of you know Coach Driggs through the OC Starz and Earthquake Lacrosse programs. Coach Driggs, a four-year letterman for the University of Virginia Men’s Lacrosse team (’91-’94), played high school lacrosse in Maryland at John Carroll School and also played Major League Lacrosse - including time with the Los Angeles Riptide.

He has been the coach of St Mary’s for the last 3 years and played an integral part in the formation of the PAL league. He comes with great coaching credentials, the reputation of running a tight ship and winning! Coach Driggs main focus will be on hiring new lower level coaches and obviously coaching.

So on behalf of the SMCHS and the Lacrosse program - Welcome Coach Driggs!

I will be moving up to the role of Director of Lacrosse for SMCHS and overseeing both the Boys and Girls lacrosse programs. In this role I will handle all the administrative aspects of the program and helping out with coaching. With 5 teams and over 175 players for the upcoming season, I felt it was important to focus on the organization of the program and to insure that the programs continue to be successful and prosper!

Thank You,

Dan Perry
